In 1991, Scott, who is the son of Dennis and Diane (Michels) Kilburg, received his high school diploma from Bellevue Marquette. He was a passionate basketball player who broke many records at Marquette High School and spent endless hours honing his shooting in the park across from his home. After completing his studies at Mount Mercy College and being married to Sarah Wagner on May 30, 1998, he went on to have a successful career in marketing and leadership positions. Family and friends had great affection for Scott, and he treasured the moments he shared with them.

Along with numerous extended family members and close friends spread across the nation, he is survived by his wife, Sarah; children, Jake and Ellie Kilburg; parents, Dennis and Diane Kilburg; in-laws, Gary and Betsy Wagner; maternal grandparents, Donald and Dorothy Michels; siblings, Josh (Wendy) Kilburg, Tami (Brett) Ploessl, and Jessica (Rodney) Putman; sister-in-law, Stacy (Loren) Potter.

Leroy and Kathleen Kilburg, Scott’s paternal grandparents, passed away before him.

A scholarship fund at the Community Foundation of Dubuque has been named in Scott’s honour for becoming the first person in his family to attend college. The Scott L. Kilburg Scholarship Fund was established to assist Bellevue residents who are first-generation college students. The family advises that a meaningful approach to continue Scott’s memory would be to donate to this fund instead of sending flowers.
